16 thg 7, 2025 · One of Germany’s most impressive castles, Burg Hohenzollern really is straight out of a fairytale. Sat perfectly atop a mountain, it’s become one of the most famous and recognisable castles in the country.
Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of the Hohenzollern dynasty who ruled parts of Germany for many centuries and became German Emperors. It is still a private property shared by various branches of the Hohenzollern family.
The first castle on the mountain was constructed in the early 11th century. Over the years the House of Hohenzollern split several times, but the castle remained in the Swabian branch, the dynastic seniors of the Franconian-Brandenburgian cadet branch that later acquired its own imperial throne.
Located at the top of Mount Hohenzollern, at an altitude of 855 meters in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, the Hohenzollern Castle dominates the landscape of the Swabian Jura in the southwest of the country.
After the destruction and decay of its two predecessors, it was rebuilt between 1850 and 1867 - bigger and more beautiful than ever before. And the castle is still privately owned by the Hohenzollern family. It once served the Counts of Zollern as a secure bulwark in times of war.
